There is definitely something about Deka which makes her different from the other girls because she can sense and feel the Deathshrieks before she even sees them. When Deathshrieks interrupt the Ritual Deka’s true identity is revealed and everyone’s perception of her including her father’s changes. If Deka passes the Ritual she can remain with her father and part of the village, but if she fails she will be considered an outcast and banished. The book follows 16 year old Deka preparing to take part in the Ritual of Purity, a blood ceremony. I was honoured to be part of the readalong with Tandem Collective for this amazing book as it was one of my anticipated reads of the year. The stranger offers her a choice: fight for the Emperor, with others just like her, or be destroyed… My Review She is saved by a mysterious woman who tells Deka of her true nature: she is an Alaki, a near-immortal with exceptional gifts. But when Deka bleeds gold – the colour of impurity, of a demon – she faces a consequence worse than death. Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in Otera, a deeply patriarchal ancient kingdom, where a woman’s worth is tied to her purity, and she must bleed to prove it.
